LISA FRANK PARTY SKORT

by

I always enjoy making outfits for friends: working on the fit, imagining how they will energize the garments, what kind of adventures they will find. This outfit was commissioned by my friend Sara for another friend’s Lisa Frank themed birthday party in Los Angeles. She sent the fabric and her measurements and one request: matching scrunchie!

Inspired by the 90s theme, I went for a party recess concept that could only mean skort. This one has a cotton lined crotch panel which makes it perfect for bike riding and grinding on the dance floor.

Of course there are pockets!

The tie die lycra has a holographic splatter all over it, which I enhanced with neon pink and holographic lycra accents. I used my serger to make a rolled hem with neon threads, to echo retro lettuce hemming, but kept the hems flat for a cleaner finish.

The top is reversible, depending on what colors she wants to feature on the front.

She totally pulls off the psychedelic trapper keeper babe look!

FREEDOM FRY winter 2015

by

Just before leaving LA last fall, I made another batch of outfits for the indie music group Freedom Fry. We used the same basic shapes as our first outfits, since those silhouettes flatter and the fit is accurate.

Once again, Marie’s former career as a thorough stylist was evident. She pre-washed the fabrics, paired them with notions, and attached sketches with reference photos for each variation. She effectively communicates the aesthetic she wants, and I am able to apply my own design ideas and craftsmanship. It feels like we’re really in sync, and I love being able to help this band evolve more fully into themselves.

All fabrics came from Michael Levine. The outfits above and below are both quilting cottons.  Of course the adorable dog matches the home. Did I mention Marie is a stylist? Total respect for this lady’s design execution.

These white outfits turned out to be my favorite from the group. The fabric is a loose weave cotton-linen blend, and I used the raw selvage throughout both garments. Marie’s dress has an attached poncho with a plunging neckline to keep the look young.

Their home was the perfect setting for our informal photo-shoot, and really brought their outfits to life. I love working with this couple!

SHING SHIRT

by

I made myself this sleeveless tee, but it didn’t fit. It so totally didn’t fit me that it fits Shing really well, and Shing is a tiny Asian woman.

Shing normally dresses in a pallette of gray and khaki, and she creates art in my spectrum of aqua, coral, and goldenrod. So fittingly, my clothing matches her imagination.

This shirt was made from all fabrics and remnants in my stash, and this lace triangle is just about my favorite:
