ALLIGATOR DREAM PURSE

by

For this slice of New Orleans life, we’re living upstairs from my old apartment. My best friends Maria and Patrick are in the other upstairs apartment, and we have breakfast together on our back porch. Soon after our arrival, Maria told me about a dream in which she found a nest of baby alligators, and they were all pink. It’s such a charming swamp discovery. And so: fanny pack!

I used glitter vinyl, one of my favorite materials. The baby gator was cut with an exacto, carefully sewn, and the edges were finished with puff paint. I used puff paint for the teeth and claws too.

Such meticulous puff painting! I practice almost every night. I omitted the planned eyes, because this magic alligator sees through dream visions, of course.

I really love these findings! The metal parachute clasp is so smooth and shiny, and I love the durability of a brass zipper. The piping is reflective plastic, given to me years about by Patrick. The sides and backing are a metallic printed denim, and the lining is waterproof rip-stop nylon.

There’s a zipper pocket with contrast lining, as well as a slim pocket for ID. Enough pockets to keep your gear safe and accessible, but still easy to look through in a dark party.

It was a lot of fun to make, and since we share a studio space and live in adjoining apartments it was hard to keep secret! But I managed to keep it together.

GLITTER KEY FOBS

by

I love the sparkle of glitter vinyl, it’s like a pool from my dreams filled with stars and David Bowie songs. At least that’s what I was going for when I designed these key fobs, but by 2am everything starts to feel like that anyway. And you can buy a piece of my mania for your own life!

Though colloquially called key chains, these are actually key fobs.

The base fabric is glitter vinyl, hand-cut and sewn on my Pfaff. I seal the edges with sparkle puff paint, which requires a steady hand and multiple layers for a smooth finish. Though flexible and wonderfully plastic, these fobs are incredibly durable and keep their seductive luster. And some favorite shots (clearly this angle worked well for me):

These little beauties are listed in my Etsy shop, and would make an excellent gift (and fund further glitter vinyl purchases!).

SHING SHIRT

by

I made myself this sleeveless tee, but it didn’t fit. It so totally didn’t fit me that it fits Shing really well, and Shing is a tiny Asian woman.

Shing normally dresses in a pallette of gray and khaki, and she creates art in my spectrum of aqua, coral, and goldenrod. So fittingly, my clothing matches her imagination.

This shirt was made from all fabrics and remnants in my stash, and this lace triangle is just about my favorite:

Godspeed, pretty tank top. Enjoy your new life with someone who actually fits you.

SEA TURTLE QUILT

by

I was picking up some basic supplies at Joann Fabrics when another customer asked my opinion on some fabrics she had selected. Always ready to share my ideas about color, I enthusiastically helped and before I knew it I had been asked to make the quilt myself. It’s my client’s own idea for the design, and really I only helped with the fabric selection (and I love her choice of batiks!). This quilt was given to my client’s friend.

The finished blanket is about 40 x 40″ which seems perfect for a little baby. The X stitches in the background are on a 4″ grid. This is the first quilt I made since 2007.

There is an extra layer of batting beneath the shell to give it extra dimensionality.

My husband and I made a trip up to Santa Cruz and San Francisco around New Year’s Eve, and I brought the blanket with me.

This was a feel-good project to work on (especially during a cold snap). The client was thrilled, and I hope the family has many lovey years with this blanket.

JUNIOR RAVER HOODIE

by

Immediately after my niece received her hoodie, almost-7-year-old Kaden requested one of his own and I got to deliver it in person.

He drew me this picture of poop, pee, and diarrhea. Later we played in the park, and pretended that dogs were poo monsters and the only way for us to be safe was to climb the sprawling oak trees. He has a slight lisp, and hearing him scream “POO MONTHTUZZ!” was equally adorable and hilarious.

I drafted the pattern myself and it just fits him. I would have preferred for it to be a little roomier, but it fits him now and it will fit a different kid next year, when I will have to make a new jacket for the little guy. Like his sister’s, this hoodie is made from all remnants and stashed fabrics. The shell is lycra, the lining is snuggle fleece, the pockets and hood are minky, and the hood is trimmed in faux fur.

IMG_0212I also gave him (and his sister) some of my painted goggles that look cool but are rather worthless at Burning Man. And he lost his front tooth that night! The other front tooth popped out a few days later.

He slept with this hoodie on their first night together, so that’s a good sign (Bloppy Bloppy was also jammin’ on the top bunk).

My niece is almost 13 and definitely no longer a little girl who likes to cuddle and be 100% sweet (though of course I am very proud of the smart and talented teen she is becoming), so it was really awesome to spend time with my nephew while he still is a little boy who will let me kiss his head and just be silly. What sweethearts!
