JORDAN’S PLAID DRESS

by

I promised my friend/boss Jordan I would make her this dress way back in October and only just around to finishing it last week as part of my goal to de-clutter my to-do list. It has the same shape as my striped dress, with some modifications for the plaid.

The fabric is a printed cotton jersey that of course came from Fabric Planet. It doesn’t have a whole lot of stretch to it, which is fine for this dress on this tiny lady.

I didn’t use a pattern for this; instead I took her measurements and drew out the shape of the top using those numbers. It’s always a little strange to be sewing something for someone who is so much smaller (or larger) than me because the pieces all feel wrong, and I have to admit that the first try turned into a new shirt for Jason’s niece. In fact with all the extra fabric I have I made a sundress for my niece’s birthday and will probably be making skirts for the collective nieces, although I’m already getting sick of this fabric!

I love how simple this design is and am looking forward to updating it for warmer seasons!

MIZZOU CUSTOM SADDLE COVER

by

I’ve been working with Villy Customs out of Dallas, and was recently commissioned to make a seat cover to compliment a customer’s Missouri State-themed bicycle. I enjoyed reproducing the graphic mascot logo with my acrylics, and the bike turned out fantastic!

Fleetwood did an amazing job with all the details! Coincidentally, this bike could very easily be converted into a Saints-cycle; we just need to swap out the saddle cover!

That’s right, even the elastic on the underside of the seat goes with the color scheme! For the sides I used a black lycra with a waffle texture and a slight gold sheen to it.

Chalice Girl!

by

A friend of ours is a Unitarian Universalist minister, and she’s created a Unitarian Universalist superhero to use in Sunday worship with the children–Chalice Girl. To aid in that purpose, Chalice Girl needed a costume, something that she could quickly put on while ducking behind a pulpit that would still get the kiddos excited.

Tera had a pretty good idea of the basic design she wanted, but still gave me enough freedom to make something we’d both be excited about. I incorporated the UU icon of a chalice in two intersecting rings, which was fun to re-imagine in textiles. I was able to take advantage of the crazy stock of prom-dress material in the fabric store, so Tera’s cape is a fabulous hot pink with silver glitter. The cape has snaps at the neck, so it can be quickly and securely fastened.

To attach the appliqued fabric to the cape I used double sided iron adhesive and then stitched over the designs with yellow and pink thread. The silver and gold is 4-way stretch lycra, one of my favorite fabrics ever, which was also used for the stretchy wrist cuffs. You can’t be a super hero without wrist cuffs!

My favorite part of this project was making the flame. It’s got the gold lycra layered with some shiny swatches I got for free.
