PROFESSIONAL PJs: scrappy summer camisoles

by

In any day, my schedule may include sewing at home, meeting with clients, and running errands on bike. What kind of outfit is appropriate and comfortable for all these activities? I’m developing ‘professional pajama’ style, for creative professionals who work from home. It’s going to be a movement!

The first entry into this bold new category of dress code is a camisole. I drafted the pattern and jumped right in with this sample. It was fun to make, and gave me lots of ideas for a second top, in terms of design and process.

The rayon drawstring pants are also part of this comfy fashion lifestyle.

I was so happy with the first top that I immediately made a second. I got more ambitious for the back, but unfortunately sewed the center back panels together along the wrong side. Since the jersey is so stretchy the design still works, but I was going for a neater fit. Next time!

Both versions are made mostly from scrap jerseys I’ve saved from other projects, and a few fabrics I have stashed away in my cabinet. Some of the seaming is structurally motivated, and some of it was designed for the small and odd-shaped scraps available. The cups are lined with a second layer of jersey, and I used 1/4″ elastic at the underbust seam to offer a bit of support.

Posting these tops together makes it easy to see the design evolution, and it makes me excited for what else this can become!

As always, thanks go to my husband for the photography.

COSMIC PINK LEGGINGS

by

I recently photographed several new projects, but while those pictures linger on my hard drive please enjoy my favorite new leggings.

Of course the shirt is also my own design, and the sparkly gold hat was made by Annie.

I got these Reiker sandals in Munich in 2009, and they are my most comfortable shoes as long as I’m also wearing socks. At this point I have quite a collection of socks that I wear with my beloved orange sandals! My teenage self would be appalled at this, and there’s a good chance that my mom is too.

These pictures were taken around the Venice Canals, after my husband and I rode bikes to our favorite bar on the beach for frothy Xmas beers.

That’s my kind of white Christmas!

Also Troop Beverly Hills is finally on Netflix! It’s pretty funny and wonderfully campy, and a little heavy on the ‘shopping is life’ mantra (and even though they sweep it away at the end, the message is still there). Here’s the troop from Mar Vista ordering 42 boxes of cookies! I was a hard-core Girl Scout for many years and though I kicked butt at cookie sales I don’t miss it.

Still way too busy and stressed, but getting through the days. Follow me on Instagram for more regular updates. Happy New Year!

MOODY HOODIE

by

My adorable little niece has been at it again, always growing up! She’s almost 13, and exactly like her momma has entered the somewhat moody ‘my favorite color is black’ phase of her life (and is just as sweet and funny as ever, but now with added introspection and an Instagram account).

I should have been working on projects for clients, but one morning I came across these gray and black remnants and dropped everything to whip up a hoodie for my little brooding ray of sunshine.

I wanted the hoodie to feel like a cocoon, something she could retreat into, something that would make her mother say “I can’t see your face!”

So it’s all remnant fabrics, and the silver zipper was also from my stash. I had purple and blue thread in my serger, which happens to be Allia’s current favorite color besides black and gray. I used a vintage raglan pattern as a base, and added the hood and pockets.

Of course now her little brother wants one too, but his should be green and blue, and he drew me a picture of poop as payment.

Don’t let that look on her face fool you, she’s just as weird and silly as the rest of us.
