CAT PUPPETS

by

The original inspiration for these puppets was [no surprise] Burning Man. We were going to have a puppet show! But we got distracted, and did other fun things, yet the puppet-making inspiration has stuck around.

Another little project to use up neat scraps, and give as charming gifts, and always fun to get drunk and then see what the little kitties have to say about the world.

They make great liquor bottle coozies too. So if you’re really desperate, you don’t have to drink alone anymore! Another tip: they fit nicely on top of a long water pipe, if you happen to be the kind of person who owns that kind of thing. If.

I love the pipe cleaner whiskers of course, but they are not baby-friendly, no matter how friendly the babies themselves might be.

They are all cats. I’ve thought about making other creatures, mostly robots and monsters, but so far I’m really enjoying having all these damn cat puppets strewn around my space. I’m surrounded by cat puppets.

Some have names, some don’t yet. Mercy was the second-ever cat puppet, and he stays with us. He came to a funeral once, but I made him wait in the car.

Here’s the first ever: Slowjam, given to buddy Matt at his Bill Murray-themed costume birthday party (that got busted by the cops – twice!)

Mr. Siadek and I dressed up at Steve Zissoux. Oddly, I was the only diver Steve and the only cross-dressing Steve. I was also the only disco-version of Steve, with a silver glitter beard. I’ve gotten so much wear out of my glittery aqua bodysuit over the years. Also, damn, I feel like I look weird without glasses.

CHLOE DRESS

by

For months I’ve been waiting to sew my Chloe dress by Victory Patterns, and now it’s finally happened.

These pictures were taken at the Folk Music Festival in Richmond, VA. My husband and I joined my family in that beautiful city to celebrate my cousin’s wedding.

I immediately loved all the panels, and knew it would be a great canvas for showcasing different prints. The pink floral at the front and back sides was brought from Malaysia, and I already have a pillow made from that cotton. The metallic stripes at the front sides was a vintage cotton from my Grandma’s stash that I dyed fuchsia. The peacock in the back was purchased for this dress at Joann (and matches some of my cloth napkins). The orange and chartreuse silk pieces are left over from my wedding dress.

Other alterations include: re-drafted sleeve pieces, tapered front panel at collarbone and hips, added back shoulder darts, adjusted for sloping shoulder seam, took in side seams.

The only materials purchased for this dress was the peacock cotton (1yd @ $6) and the digital pattern. Once my muslin was adjusted, the dress was cut and sewn together in about 2-3 hours.

It’s kinda the perfect dress. The Chloe pattern has simple design lines, is easy to make, and could be customized by fabric choice or pattern variations. Made in these quilting cottons, I can wear it for a bike ride at the beach, then out to dinner or some of the other fancy things I do. I can’t wait to make it again!

SCRAPPY BIKINI

by

Y’all continue to sit patiently for some Burning Man photos. Just sit. Patiently.

In the meantime, here are two new pieces that I made last month. I wore them separately on the playa, but paired them into a swim suit for a trip to Laguna Beach last weekend.

Blake Gardner took this shots for me while my husband and our friend were scuba diving. scrappy bikini, made by Julianne I’m not sure why the waistband was all floppy right here. It stayed tight at Burning Man, and once I waded into the ocean it shrunk and didn’t stretch out again. That rhinestone button is actually Jason’s, but I thought he wouldn’t mind. So far there haven’t been any complaints. scrappy bikini, made by Julianne

I love how the diagonal stripes are radiating out from my waist. I designed the two pieces weeks apart, without consideration of each other, so that is a happy accident.

All the materials were scraps from my sewing cabinet, except for the lining on the shorts, which I bought to line my booty shorts. The patterns are my own, and I improvised the elaborations. scrappy bikini, made by Julianne At this point, I have this bikini, and top, leggings, and genie pants out of this same blue and green striped jersey. Am I missing anything?

OK, well, also check me out on Business Insider! Cause, you know, I’m a business-lady.
