SKIRT FESTIVAL

by

I’ve been sewing a lot of gypsy-esque skirts lately. They’re fun to wear (twirl much?) and the most comfortable thing you’ll ever put on.

They started out as playa-garb, but I quickly discovered how perfect they are for just about everything else too.

The patchwork skirts are made from cottons, silks, and vintage polys. I used cotton jersey and elastic lace for the waistbands. The jungley skirt is a rayon with lycra waistband, and sadly is the last of its kind.

All these skirts are in my Etsy shop, and I’ll be posting more over the next few months.

INDIAN SUMMER DRESS

by

Just in time for fall! My new sundress! But since I live in Los Angeles, I’ll be wearing this at the beach while y’all are freezing your butts off. And how about those new glasses, right?

I’d been eying this cute floral cotton since we got it in at Fabric Planet months ago, and as we got down to the end of the bolt I finally figured out what I wanted to make. I made my own own pattern, and it was very easy. Starting out, I wasn’t sure if this shape would be flattering on me, but I think the careful waist placement keeps it from looking like an ill-fitting sack. It’s nice to have a breezy casual dress!

The whole thing slips over my head, no zipper. The waist band is made up of two drawstrings in separate channels, which helps to define the waist and makes the dress look a lot more polished. The faux-placket is a silk-cotton blend, which has a nice subtle sheen. These adorable wooden heart buttons are also from Fabric Planet, and although they’re a little more saccharine than I normally like they were too cute to pass up. Lastly, the yellow trim is bias tape I cute from a light-weight cotton.

Thanks to my future husband Jason for taking some really great shots. And yes, that’s right, we’re getting married! Yay!

RAINBOW PLAYA BOOTS

by

I’d been eying some retro spacey boots for a couple months, and one night randomly found them on Ebay. In my size. For $10. You know what happened next. As it turns out, metallic gold puffy boots are a little too subtle for me, so I had to modify.

Right away I ripped off the Rubber Duck label on the velcro strap. Anyone who knows me from my college days knows that I’m quite fond of rubber ducks, but branding is simply not part of my aesthetic.

The next step was to cover the gold-colored suede and rubber. My first choice would have been to use liquid paint and serenely cover the fabric while sitting at the kitchen table–just this thought greatly relaxes my costume-sewing-induced panic. But I didn’t have silver paint, paint pens looked incredibly crappy, and there was some nice chrome spray paint just wasting away in the closet. So I carefully taped around all those curves and happily painted my alley silver.

Surprisingly, the now silver-and-gold boots still felt a little boring. At this point I also noticed that the silver paint was not sticking to the rubber band between the boot and the sole. The best way to decorate this area naturally seemed to be rainbow elastic and sequin trim, which I attached via hot glue gun.

There was no point in stopping here, so I also sewed some rhinestones where the tag used to be.

These boots are comfortable, very warm, and now totally bad ass. Definitely worthy for the playa, and they might even be the tipping point for getting me to venture to snowy climes this winter! I wore them to a Burning Man party this weekend and they were perfect. And I have to admit that now I want a pair in every juicy color.
